Whitacre lauds collaborative spirit in ‘State of Research’ address’
The synergistic environment at Ohio State has led to unprecedented growth in research activity, even in times of uncertain funding and resources, Vice President for Research Caroline Whitacre told a crowded audience at the Ohio Union Nov. 8.
Delivering her annual State of Research address as a precursor to presenting OSU’s Innovator of the Year awards (see page 9), Whitacre used the opportunity to highlight Ohio State’s reach across the state, the nation and the globe, its strategic industry partnerships that are creating jobs and impacting economic development and scholars who are working collaboratively to find solutions to the most pressing issues facing the planet today.
“Our faculty, staff and students are leading the drive to enrich the lives of people in Ohio, across the nation and around the world,” she said. “Whether it’s conquering disease or improving health, designing fuel cells, creating new nanotechnological materials, determining the structure of proteins, understanding global warming or studying the far reaches of the universe, Ohio State is ideally positioned to make a difference. Our discoveries are advancing knowledge and creating new solutions to address the world’s most pressing problems.” Read more

Living Our Values:
Diversity in People and Ideas
As an institution focused on educating tomorrow’s leaders and solving problems of worldwide significance, an appreciation for diverse thinking and experiences is critical. In order to achieve academic excellence, the University must create a culture of mutual respect and inclusivity, and one in which each person is valued for who he or she is as a whole person, and his or her unique contributions.
This value celebrates the unique contributions and viewpoints each person offers. The rich fabric created by these viewpoints is what enables the University to conduct world-changing research, and identify new ways to prepare tomorrow’s leaders to continue those efforts. Read more
