Welcome to the osu.edu redesign blog!

osu.edu is being redesigned and you can help.

Redesign mock-ups: Template page

Some OSU sites, Account Management for example, use a default template for tight consistency with the osu.edu site. The first link below is a current Account Management page. Compare the current page with the sketch in the second link.

2nd design

I think the second design is more reader-friendly and organizes the information better.

some of each

I like the fonts on the new version as well as the general page layout for the text (i.e. whitespace on both left and right, and more whitespace at the top). However, I like the appearance and font of the tabs in the current page layout. The new layout is less clear/communicative.

don'et like it - too many

don'et like it - too many word, too text heavy, needs some graphics, links need to be easier to find -

Account management page

I hate to say it, but I like the current version better than the new design... I think it is the length of the text box... it's harder to read the new one since the lines of text go much further across the page... that's proven to be more difficult to read when line length gets that long. I know some feel it wastes space but if it's harder to read I'd rather have the white space, personally.

Times?

Why is the new page moving fonts over to Times? While I like the look of Times in print, sans-serif fonts look much better and are more readable on screen. Don't change it just for the sake of change.

The navigation and

The navigation and organization of content appears better in the new design. Will the horizontal nav bar be drop-down, so you could go directly from the current page to, for example, a sub-page of "OSU Wireless Network"?

However, the look of the current page is better than the new design. The contrast is better, the use of color is better, etc. The font size and spacing is improved in the redesign, but the text should be changed to Arial or some other sans serif font for easier readability.

Serif font?

Why are we insistent upon using a serif font? The interference is extremely hard to read.

Spell check

I know it's just a layout, but University is misspelled in the upper left corner.

The new one is washed out

The new one is washed out and pale looking. I prefer the current version.

I concur that the new design

I concur that the new design is washed out and more difficult to read than the current design for this page.

i dont like the new layout

i dont like the new layout better, the old one is fine and I dont see any reason to change it

Arizona State just launched

Arizona State just launched a partnership with Google that will allow students to get 2 gb of email space. This seems like a good idea to expand email boxes. Here is a link to Arizona State's project

tabs- font size

The 2nd layout is not as cluttered as the first, however the font size for the different tabs are slightly larger on the orginal layout. The 2nd layout would be easier to navigate through the tabs if the font size is increased.

i prefer the first version,

i prefer the first version, I dont think the other one looks as professional. Also I just think it's harder to read, sorry.

I like the second design,

I like the second design, but would suggest smaller font (many browsers allow the user to manually change the font of what they view). I also like the addition of buckeyelink to the upper navigation menu.

An improvement

I like the updated layout. The current version requires too much use of the Back button. The added second-level menu is simple and useful without making the page look cluttered.

I'm assuming the new version will use style similar to the current site (ie. not the default blue and purple links), so it might help to use mockups that reflect that. Would probably improve feedback for the new template.

New and old designs need more thought

I agree with the comment that there is too much content on one page and it is diffuicult to read. I think it would be better with some graphics and links to more detail.

MAKE THE EMAIL WORK...it is

MAKE THE EMAIL WORK...it is always messing up and being slow

How about a spell check, it

How about a spell check, it is 2008! Also how about being able to recall an email if not read? Wait, How about utilizing gmail.....or at least utilize the concepts of it, I hate the osu email, the thought of using it after grad to keep my email address makes me crazy!

Try a browser with spellcheck

I use Firefox, which automatically spellchecks anything being entered into any form at any time (underlines all misspelled words in red). It's a great thing to have.

I like the new versions

I like the new versions bigger text and the more white space, but I also prefer the tab appearance in the current version

Redesign

The use of tabs itself is outdated. They remind me of the top of a huge filing cabinet. I understand that the demographic is to be broad, but the implementation of more contemporary features would be greatly appreciated. I have been through the tabs before and tried to redesign them myself for class. The whole idea of the tabs is hard to get away from so I think you should seriously sit down with more innovative minds when creating the next website.

Ohio State should represent more than simplicity. This blog represents a step into the current internet culture, but it will not have any effect at all. With time against us, it would take too long to change the code according the blog comments. Especially for the state salaried employees who would have to do it.

My advice for next time would be to bring minds from the worlds of business, art, and IT. Those minds , if brought together, would make a website that is both functional and new. Anyone could change the way the tabs looked. If you had three years to develop ideas and code, try bringing in some people to help with creativity. Try thinking outside the box. We are Ohio State University, try to make the website as big as the school. Maybe next time guys, thanks.

Second design is much better

Second design is much better IMHO.

Serif Fonts

What is the rationale behind using a serifed font for the body of the text? Numerous studies have shown that on the screen a sans-serif font is more readable.

re: Fonts

Yes, this mock-up was more of a carry-over from the current template's design.
We'll likely use Helvetica/Arial for all page text.

Thanks for the comment.

Needs Work...

The new design needs work. The tabs are extremely unattractive. The list items (navigation) on the left needs some type of styling to get a more attractive feel. Whether it be simply changing the background color or something similar, it just needs work.

A navigation breadcrumb is something that is much needed as well. It would be rather easy to integrate this into the current redesign.

Although KISS is typically a good concept to follow, this design just needs a bit more work. Not necessarily more graphics, but more color contrast.

Hopefully Sketch Says it all...

I like the idea of the left hand column with easier to find quick links to various important areas of the site. However to just have plain text for these links with no image or special color does not help the site. Even some sort of bullets or table would help a little. I realize it said sketch of second layout - and I hope it is just that.

Personally I like the tabs and colors used in the current one, if the second will be similar in that way then great, just add another column on the left for links.

Plus there's purple for the links visited right on the Top Tabs across... This does not fit in at all. It could be easily changed however to just have visited links the same color as non-visited.

Judging the two layouts though, personally the look goes all out to the current one. I think it would be best to just integrate the new parts into the current layout, instead of complete redesign - or - if you want a complete redesign, then do just that with complete new look and layout- the current "redesign" is basically a stripped down version of the original one with an extra navigation bar on the left.
